Explosive Growth Syndrome
Explosive Growth Syndrome Defined (WiseTraveler estimated reading time: 1 minute or less) Explosive Growth Syndrome (EGS) is a term that the The WiseTraveler uses to describe what we have experienced here in the Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Sevierville and Smokey Mountain area. In as little as ten years ago, you could see nothing but a scattered business here and there on each side of the street as you made your way from Sevierville to Pigeon Forge. Well, those days are long gone! Now there are thriving Restaurants, Outlets, Theatres, and host of other businesses located as far as the eye can see. It has been estimated that there are over ten million visitors to the Smokey Mountain National Park every year (the most visited National Park in the Nation) and needless to say, it keeps things hopping for the area businesses, hotels and cabins in Pigeon Forge as well as cabins in Gatlinburg (link to Cabinkeeper in new window). Along with this, there has been a huge demand for accommodations and therein is where the EGS start cracking… You see, with such a demand, many developers (and “wanna-be” developers) have set up shop to try cashing in on the cabin sales and rental industry. They see it as somewhat of a “goldrush” concept… the first to get there, dig in, build a cabin in the smokies will be the first one to rent it or sell it and cash in on the profits! This breeds danger! This has created a massive number of cabins that are either poorly or unsafely built, found in terrible locations, or worst still… all of the above! Also a part of Explosive Growth Syndrome is the fact the many cabin rental companies are poorly representing cabin owners and guests. Remember the goldrush concept? Many of these homes are dressed up nice and rented in un-clean, un-sanitized conditions that most folks would consider “way under the mark” for their children or loved ones to be playing or sleeping in. FACT: Many rental agencies allow comforters to be used several nights by various guests before they are ever cleaned!!! In other words, you may get clean sheets and pillow-cases but the top covering was used by the couple that just left before you arrived. Can you imagine remains neglected in the bathroom? Whether a “substandard” cabin is rented or sold, it’s a vicious cycle if you’re not dealing with a company that truly understands what “clean, safe and good location” really means! “Nobody knows like The WiseTraveler”
